Held in conjunction with the City of Newark’s Department of Parks & Recreation ‘Winterfest’ celebration - which is held the first Friday in December - the Reindeer Run and Reindeer Romp are evening races that utilize downtown Newark, the University of Delaware campus and the James F. Hall Trail.
Each course is outlined in luminaries and sprinkled with holiday entertainment, making this event a wonderful way to kick-off the holiday season.
The inaugural run, held in 2006, drew more than 200 runners and nearly 40 romp participants, despite having to postpone the event one day due to inclement weather.
In 2007, 307 runners and 88 rompers braved the cold, damp weather and raised $20,000.
The 3K romp is a wonderful way for families to suppport the wonderful cause. This invigorating walk takes place "on the green" of the University of Delaware and children ages 12 and under will become decorated like a reindeer during the romp.
The event has been embraced by the City of Newark and the University of Delaware community, with various businesses, clubs, sororities and organizations stepping up to help volunteer for the event, decorate the course and support all of the competitors. Many downtown merchants are even offering discount coupons provided in participant goodie bags.
Answers to common questions:
1. Children may participate in the romp without registering, but will not receive the goodies that registered rompers do.
2. We discourage dogs from attending for the safety of the animals and the runners/rompers.
3. In the event of extremely inclement weather, the city's Winterfest might be postponed, and if it is, the run/romp will be as well. That information would be posted on our Web site as soon as a decision is made.
