Lewes Polar Bear Plunge
Thousands of ‘Polar Bears’ pack Rehoboth Beach – with thousands more lining the boardwalk to catch a glimpse of the spectacle – and, at 1 p.m., take an icy dip into the Atlantic Ocean to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Delaware.
Each Polar Bear raises a minimum of $50 to take the plunge and registration can be completed on-line, by calling (866) I-PLUNGE or by printing out and mailing a completed form.
The event has grown from a mere 78 participants brave (or crazy) enough to take the first plunge in 1992 to more than 2,000 Polar Bears each of the past five years!
The 2008 Plunge drew a record 2,767 participants, a crowd of more than 15,000 spectators and raised an event-record $522,000!
Since its inception the Lewes Polar Bear Plunge has raised nearly $4 million dollars for Special Olympics Delaware - money that helps the organization continue to fulfill its mission of helping children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
