Sports training and competition for all ability levels is offered in 20 sports, with the master sports of badminton, croquet and horseshoes being piloted this spring.
Athletes train for 8-10 weeks under the guidance of trained coaches before culminating their efforts at a final competition. Whenever feasible, league play, time trials and clinics conducted by local college and high school teams have been introduced to enhance the training process.
Competitions of all sizes are held across the state throughout the year, highlighted by signature events: Summer Games, Fall Sports Festival, Team Basketball Tournament, Basketball Skills, Soccer Skills and the Winter Bowling Festival.
Along with state level competitions, Special Olympics Delaware athletes are also eligible to apply for National and World Games. The 2010 USA National Games were held in July on the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln, Neb., and the 2011 World Summer Games will be held in Athens, Greece, next July.
