Motor Activity Training Program

The Special Olympics Motor Activities Training Program (MATP) is designed to prepare athletes with severe or profound intellectual disabilities, including athletes with significant physical disabilities, for sport-specific activities appropriate for their abilities.

The MATP individualizes motor activity instruction so that persons with severe handicaps can participate in appropriate recreation activities geared to their ability levels.  By incorporating appropriate levels of modifications and partial participation, skills are developed in areas of mobility, dexterity, kicking, striking, manual/electric wheelchair, aquatics.

Upon completion of their training season athletes participate in demonstrations of personal best either in a site-based Challenge Day or as a part of a larger Special Olympics event.
