The Athlete Area Input Councils are an element of Athlete Leadership and have representation from all five Areas.

Having an Athlete Input Council provides athletes opportunities to develop leadership skills, serve as volunteers, provide valuable input to the operation of Special Olympics, be role models for other athletes, and serve as ambassadors in the community. Having athletes involved in meaningful ways conveys how much Special Olympics respect and value them as an integral part of our organization. It also gives our organization valuable insight into what interests and motivates athletes in the program. This insight will help us develop programs that will attract new athletes and retain existing athletes.

Area Input Councils have an Athlete Input Council Chair and an Athlete Mentor who helps to facilitate the meetings and provides guidance to athlete leaders. Each of the 5 Area Athlete Input Council Chairs form the Statewide Athlete Input Council. The State Athlete Input Council Chair represents all SODE athletes as a member of the Board of Directors.
