Special Olympics Delaware is made up of over 100 statewide programs that vary in size and athlete age ranges. Programs fall into one of three categories, described below. Athletes have the option of joining the program closest to their hometown that fits their interests, or can join a different program if its sports or social interests better fit their needs. Also, an athlete can join another program's team for a season if a sport he/she is interested in is not offered by the hometown program.
Community-based programs are managed by a volunteer program director and coaching staff. Athletes vary in ages and typically live within the geographic region of the "hometown" of the program. Sports offered vary depending on the program, but athletes have the flexibility to participate with other programs for a season if a particular sport is not offered by their "home" program. Use the search buttons above to find a program near you. Once you have found one, or if you have any questions during the process, please contact Brenda Zullo at bzullo@udel.edu or 302-740-1045.
Note: Any program without sports or contact information is one that requires membership or residency in order to participate. For more information about any of these programs contact Brenda Zullo.
State- or county-wide sports programs are managed through the SODE office. The sports include equestrian, figure skating, golf, long distance running/walking, skiing (alpine and Nordic), and snowshoeing. Athletes interested in participating in any of these sports should contact Mark Wise at mwise@udel.edu or 302-831-4669.
School programs are run directly through the school, usually overseen by an administrator, teacher or paraprofessional. See our list of schools. If your child's school is not on the list, contact Jon Buzby at jbuzby@udel.edu or 302-831-3484.
