The distance between the schools is 58 miles, and the run is divided in half. Student-athletes from the visiting team’s school start the relay run on the 50-yard line of their football stadium the day before the scheduled football game. They run the ball to Aberdeen, Maryland, the midway point for the run, and hand the ball over to the home team’s student-athletes during a special ceremony. The run picks up the next morning, with the special game ball being delivered to the 50-yard line approximately 30 minutes prior to the start of the game.
The student-athletes at each university decided to take on the challenge of this run to not only heighten attention to the football rivalry between the schools, but to also help raise awareness and financial support for each state’s respective Special Olympics program, as all proceeds go to Special Olympics Delaware and Special Olympics Maryland.
